Spring is here… finally! Actually, according to the calendar, it’s been here for a while now, and we’ve talked about it already, but now we’re in it, and for me… ahhh, spring! The most beautiful season of the year!

It feels like even people are a bit friendlier in spring… (come on, give me a high-five) and the plants start to bloom! Your home gets a different kind of light, your garden feels more welcoming, the animals come out or start showing up… you step outside without three layers of clothes… this is what they call life, right?

Speaking of clothes… oops, I mean flowers, the first ones to pop up are usually snowdrops, crocuses, and daffodils… then come tulips, primroses, and bluebells. Of course, there are plenty more, but most of us have at least one or two of these in the garden!

And how can you keep your garden going all year round…?

If you want some flowers blooming in June/July, you can plant NOW: dahlias, gladiolus, and lilies… you can even give it a go with cosmos, sunflowers, and cornflowers.

Tomatoes, beans, and pumpkins are a good shout to plant now so you can pick them in a few months. And if you like fresh herbs, basil, parsley, and chives are great choices too.

You can (and should) also take this time to sort out a few things in your garden, like topping up compost/fertiliser and fixing any drainage problems.

Speaking of drainage, it’s better to fix it now than when everything turns into a swamp.

Winter might have left a few marks too, so now is the best time to get stuck in, sort out raised beds, fences, benches, and paths that got a bit damaged along the way.

That cosy little corner in your garden? It’s about to become even better, so make sure you give it a little love now—this, at least for me, is the best time of year to enjoy it.

You can also throw in a few ideas to make your garden even cosier and a bit more international, mixing in little touches from Japanese, Scandinavian, or Mediterranean gardens.

Make the most of spring in every possible way, including using your gloves, because now they’ll only get dirty, not cold and wet!
