It’s the 1st aid kit for your garden!
Common Problems and How to Fix Them
- Yellow Leaves

Yellow leaves are your plant’s way of saying, “Hey, I’m not okay!” Here’s what to do:
Too Much Water: If the soil feels like a wet sponge, stop watering and let it dry .
No food: Yellow leaves can mean your plant is hungry, and for that, you can add some compost or fertilizer.
Bugs: check under the leaves. If you see tiny bugs, spray them with soapy water. (read more in item 2)
Tip: Don’t freak out. Yellow leaves don’t mean your plant is dead. It’s just asking for help.
- Bugs Everywhere
Bugs are the worst. Here’s how to deal with the usual suspects:
Aphids: These tiny green or black bugs suck the life out of plants. Spray them off with water or use soapy water.
Slugs and Snails: They love damp spots. Put out a dish of beer to trap them. Yes, beer. It works.
Caterpillars: They eat leaves like crazy. Pick them off by hand or use a natural spray called BT.
Story Time: I once spent an entire evening picking caterpillars off my broccoli. Now I just use BT spray. Way easier.
- Wilting Plants

Wilting plants look sad, but they’re not always a lost cause.
No water: If the soil is dry, give your plants a good drink.
Too Hot: On super hot days, plants can wilt even if they’re watered. Shade them with a cloth or move pots to a cooler spot.
Root Rot: If the soil smells bad and is too wet, your plant’s roots might be rotting. Repot it in fresh soil.
Wilting plants are like tired kids. They just need a little care to perk up.
- Weeds Taking Over
Weeds are the ultimate party crashers. Here’s how to kick them out:
Mulch: Spread mulch around your plants to stop weeds from growing.
Pull em’ early: Don’t wait. Pull weeds as soon as you see them.
Vinegar Trick: Spray weeds with vinegar to kill them. Just don’t spray your plants.
Fix Your Soil
Let’s talk dirt…….(pun intended! ) literally. If your soil isn’t happy, your plants won’t be either.
Test it: Grab a soil test kit (they’re cheap and easy to find online or at garden centers). It’ll tell you what’s missing, like nutrients or pH balance.
Add Compost: Compost is like a superfood for soil. Mix it in to make your dirt richer and healthier.
Switch ’em: If you’re growing veggies, don’t plant the same thing in the same spot every year. Rotate your crops to keep the soil from getting tired.
Quick Tip: Think of your soil like a pantry. If it’s empty, your plants go hungry. Keep it stocked, and they’ll thrive.
A Few Extra Tricks
Buddy System: Some plants just get along better. For example, marigolds scare off pests, and basil makes tomatoes taste amazing. Plant them together!
Water : Water early in the morning or late in the evening to cut down on evaporation. And aim for the soil, not the leaves……….wet leaves can lead to problems.
Take Notes: Jot down what works and what doesn’t. Did your tomatoes love that fertilizer? Did your cucumbers hate that spot? Keep track so you can do better next year.
Look, gardening isn’t always easy. You’ll mess up. Plants will die. Bugs will show up uninvited. It happens to everyone. But with this cheat sheet, you’ve got a game plan for fixing the big stuff.
And hey, killing a plant or two doesn’t make you a bad gardener……..it makes you a learner. So don’t stress. have fun with it.
Now get out there and grow something awesome!
