Something cool happened the other day—this client wanted more privacy at home but:
- Didn’t want to feel trapped (surrounded by walls and closed-off fences).
- Didn’t want to spend a fortune (depending on the size of the area, fencing it all can be crazy expensive).
Straight away, I thought of tall plants. I just blurted out:
“How about bamboo?”
It grows fast, handles temperature changes well, blocks out nosy neighbours, and makes everything look greener! I mean, it’s bamboo, right?
Tip: Not all types of bamboo thrive here, but most do just fine and look great. Fargesia is one of the safest bets, in my opinion!
Ornamental grasses like pampas grass are also a solid option. If you want something with a more structured, geometric vibe, Italian cypress (a bit trickier to grow) or tall junipers could work well too.
But honestly, bamboo is always a reliable choice. It’s pretty much foolproof—you don’t need to stress over maintenance (I might actually do a whole post just about bamboo—how to care for it, prune it, things to watch out for, etc.). It shoots up super fast and boom! Instant privacy.
Now that I’m writing this, I just remembered some other options we talked about that day—hydrangeas and hibiscus.
They’re super colourful and work great too. They take a bit longer to grow, but when summer comes around, they completely transform the space. It looks amazing!
Let me show you folks some of the plants we talked about….so you can get the idea:
